Therapy with Children, Adolescents, and Families

            Picture
Children and teenagers respond to life events and experience stress differently than adults. They may withdraw from others, appear moody or irritable, or become defiant and angry. To complicate this, they are still developing and learning to express negative feelings in a healthy manner. Therapy can often help them learn to communicate their feelings and ask for help when needed. Therapy can also help parents understand what their child needs and improve the parent-child relationship.

            Assessment for Children and Teenagers

            Picture
Children struggling in school or who have multiple treatment issues may benefit from psychological testing to help clarify their diagnoses and subsequent treatment. Testing may include:
            • Cognitive/Intellectual Testing
            • Symptom Specific Measures (ADHD, Anxiety, etc.)
            • General Screening Tools

Assessment results can often help the therapist and family faster understand what's going on and get the appropriate support.

            Groups and Classes

We offer groups and classes on a variety of topics. Current groups being planned include:

GirlSPEAK: With the multitude of pressures facing pre-teen and teen girls these days, it’s no wonder that their self esteem begins to plummet as they enter the teenage years. At a time when your daughter is beginning to develop her sense of identity, she is also being exposed to media advertising, peer pressure, social networking, and other outside demands. These influences make it difficult for some girls to develop their own opinions about who they should be.

GirlSPEAK is a 6 week, after school class where your daughter can learn:

            • How to separate her own values from those portrayed in the media.
            • Skills to speak her mind and say “no” to peer pressure
            • Positive ways to manage stress
            • How to combat negative self-talk
            • Components of healthy and supportive peer relationships

Please call Dr. Amy Aadland at (360) 450-0140 for more information on group schedules and fees.
