Mastering Pain

My Background:

Born and raised in Seattle followed by nearly a decade living in rural Eastern Washington, I know and enjoy the range of experiences in the Pacific Northwest. The diversity of people and the potential to experience urban, suburban, and rural life within an hour of driving are significant factors contributing to the richness of experiences available in this corner of the world. Across settings, the importance of community is a prominent factor that provides context and comfort.

My family moved to Southwest Washington in June 2007 for my clinical internship at the Portland VA Medical Center. In addition to the excellent training opportunity and the ability to serve our veterans, moving to this region has been enriching in numerous ways. Whether it is the academic community, the healthcare community, the mental health community, spiritual communities or simply my neighborhood community. The people in the Vancouver-Portland area guided my family's decision to build this private practice here in Vancouver.

My Training & Experience:
- Licensed Psychologist in the State of Washington

- Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Washington State University August 2008.

- Clininical Internship completed at the Portland VA Medical Center 2007-2008.

- Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology from Washington State University December 2004.

- The breadth of my training, including clinical and research experience, covers the lifespan from child cognitive assessment and MRI research to therapy with adolescents and adults. The depth of my training has been in therapy in major medical centers, such as the Portland VA Medical Center, primary health care settings, and with specific populations such as those with chronic health conditions and traumatic life experiences.

- In my work with clients over the past 9 years I have developed a strong background in mental health interventions for health conditions, stress, anxiety, depression, with adults and teens. I enjoy working with individuals who have had difficulty "making psychotherapy work" for them and enjoy the insight and education available to those seeking mental health care for the first time.

- In addition to my training and experience, I find that my values of honesty, compassion, directness, and warmth create a comfortable and trusting environment that promotes self-discovery, adherence, growth, and significant improvement.

Other Activities and Areas of Interest:

Pain support, advocacy, and educational skill building are core issues I try to address in a variety of settings. Whether its through individual psychotherapy, the free pain support group, books or other avenues of information sharing, these are very important issues that I emphasize in my clinical and research endeavors.

I am also involved with supporting and training the next generation of psychologists and other mental health care providers. In this role in my life I have served as Adjunct Professor at Washington State University Vancouver in the past and currently serve as Content Expert for the Taylor Study Method, a unique and highly customizable study prep program for the licensure exam in psychology (EPPP). Further, I am currently establishing a practicum in the clinic to offer training to clinical psychology students in evidence-based practice in pain management.
